I. ELECTIONS UPDATE Elections had a very busy July, posting three sets of Q&As and hosting four chats on Discord with the candidates for the upcoming Board of Directors election. I. ELECTIONS ARE COMING Elections is happy to announce that this year’s Board of Directors election will be contested, with 4 declared candidates running for 2 open seats. Bios and platforms for all 4 candidates are now available at the Elections website with Q&A responses forthcoming. Bios and platforms have been translated by Translation into 21 languages, while news posts regarding the election are being translated into 26 languages. I. FANLORE EVENTS In May, Fanlore started gearing up to run their ever-popular Bingo Challenge during the first two weeks of June. The challenge is going on now, so be sure to check it out! On social media, Fanlore celebrated a month of Bandom-themed posts in May and published the first post in a new series, Meet the Team, which introduces people to the volunteers working behind the scenes at Fanlore. Their first post featured longtime Policy & Admin staffer WhatAreFrogs?! I. OPEN DOORS ANNOUNCEMENTS Open Doors released two announcements for the upcoming imports of two Lord of the Rings archives, West of the Moon and Lord of the Rings Fanfiction. Thanks to Communications and Translation for their assistance publishing these posts! These mark the eleventh and twelfth archives whose imports have been announced in 2021, with more to come soon. Open Doors’ import assistant team has also been hard at work compiling creators/works tracking spreadsheets and tags mapping spreadsheets for three archives: Land of Dreams, Weaver of Dreams, and The BuffyGiles Fanfiction Archive. I. LEGAL ADVOCACY In March, Legal has been busy working for fans! They submitted comments to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee opposing proposed changes to online copyright law, they submitted comments to the U.S. Copyright Office arguing for renewal and clarification of the vidders’ exemption to the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s anticircumvention provisions, and they joined allies in sending a letter to the newly-appointed U.S. Trade Representative supporting international copyright treaties that incorporate limitations and exceptions to copyright exclusivity.
