The OTW and our Legal committee continue to watch for issues that would affect us or our projects. In the event we are threatened, we will inform users and respond with the appropriate steps.
In general, there are a variety of actions you can take in these cases:
- Do research. The most important thing you can do is remain vigilant about what’s going on in your community. Paying attention and engaging with the process will make you better prepared to respond to changes and to help your fellow fans.
- If it’s appropriate to the situation, contact those proposing the legislation or your representatives who will be voting on it and ensure your voice is heard. Many laws have opportunities for the public to comment on them either directly as part of a feedback period or indirectly through your legislator and this is a good opportunity to ensure your voice is heard.
- Tell our Legal Advocacy team! We want to know about issues that could threaten the AO3, the OTW, or fandom spaces more broadly. Depending on the situation, we may simply choose to monitor it and see how it develops, we may respond with a Policy Comment or Letter, or we may publish an informational news post about it to signal boost the relevant information.
