Position Title: User Response Translation Translator

Committee: User Response Translation (URT) Committee

Reports to: URT Committee Chairs and Volunteer Coordinators

Time Requirements: 5+ hours per week

Term: 1 year

Role overview: Translate communications from the Policy & Abuse and Support committees to AO3 users. Translators may also provide other assistance on an as-needed basis.

Confidentiality Requirements:

  • URT translators will be required to sign and comply with the confidentiality policies of both the Policy & Abuse and Support committees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Translate and beta formal email correspondence from the Policy & Abuse and Support committees.
  • Discuss appropriate translations for common terminology and phrasing, and suggest improvements to existing standards as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively to produce consistent, high-quality translations of emails and other content.
  • Respond to requests for translation assistance as needed, and complete such requests within specified deadlines (average 3 days, depending on urgency).
  • Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive material, including but not limited to personal information included within Policy & Abuse and Support tickets.
  • Actively communicate with team members and URT chairs/volunteer coordinators about availability, task progress, and language team decisions.

Experience:

  • Experience translating from English to another language is preferred, but not required.

Skills and attributes:

  • Near-native writing fluency in both English and one of the following languages: Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, or Spanish.
  • Ability to give and accept constructive criticism.
  • Self-motivation and time management.
  • Ability to work consistently and reliably meet deadlines for time-sensitive tasks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member while also fulfilling individual responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Training requirements:

  • URT translators will be trained in all required tools, procedures, and tasks.
