Application: Tag Wrangling Volunteer (Spanish)

Position Title: Tag Wrangling Volunteer

Reports to: Tag Wrangling Chair(s), Tag Wrangling Committee

Time Requirements: Variable (2+ hour/week, plus initial training time); must log in at least once every two weeks and perform work required for assigned fandoms

Term: minimum 1 year, option to continue

Role overview: Tag wranglers work within the Archive to ensure that the varied forms of user-generated tags are sorted and filterable, without changing any of the specific tags the users choose, so that the Archive users have an easier time finding the type of content they are looking for.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sort and link tags on the Archive of Our Own according to wrangling guidelines and policies
  • Participate in discussions about wrangling guidelines
  • Communicate with supervisors and chairs about availability and any issues that arise that may impact wrangling work
  • Respond to comments and wrangling-related communications in a timely manner as defined by wrangling policies
  • Communicate respectfully with other wranglers, org volunteers and users
  • Respect the privacy of other wranglers, org volunteers and users
  • Maintain the security of all tools and logins associated with org volunteer work

Skills, experience and attributes:

  • An Archive of Our Own account and familiarity with the Archive
  • Must be at least 18 years old, and legally of age to open explicit fanworks in your local jurisdiction
  • Fandom knowledge and/or research skills
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Commitment to diversity and willingness to work descriptively, not prescriptively, in order to respect user tag choices
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing rules and guidelines as fits the needs of the Archive users
  • Patience with the limitations of Archive tools
  • Willingness to adapt and reassess wrangling commitments regularly to match your current availability

Training requirements:

  • Tag Wrangler volunteers will be trained in the tools, skills and tasks required for their role
  • Tag Wrangler volunteers will be expected to complete their initial training within six months of their induction date
  • Tag Wrangler volunteers will be expected to devote a minimum of 5 hours per week to their training prior to graduation
  • Tag Wrangler volunteers will be expected to login to our training platform as required and complete quizzes in a timely manner

Minimum Tech Requirements:
While there is no specific software that requires installation for wranglers, as our tools are generally online and browser based, we do require that our volunteers have technical devices that meet the following requirements:

  • A stable internet connection with access to the Archive as well as Google services
    • This may require performing system updates to have a supported Operating Systems
  • Being comfortable with typing and copy/pasting large amounts of text
  • Willing and able to login to read and respond to email sent to the OTW email address that is issued to every volunteer as part of the onboarding process a minimum of once every two weeks
