Position Title: Open Doors Committee Technical Volunteer

Role overview: Assist Open Doors with data wrangling fanworks archives to facilitate their import to the Archive of Our Own.
Key Responsibilities
- Retrieve, verify and clean metadata from external fanworks archives and convert it to MySQL tables for import
- Clean story files from external fanworks archives to remove outdated formatting and personal information
- Optionally improve the Python scripts for data cleansing
- Optionally, improve the Open Doors React + Rails importing site
Skills, experience and attributes
Technical
- Essential: SQL language and usage of MySQL
- Essential: Python, React, Rails or another programming language
- Essential: Experience using Google Drive and Google Sheets
- Nice to have: Advanced Sheets/Excel skills
Other
- Essential: Excellent attention to detail
- Essential: Commitment to team building and working effectively as part of a small team
- Essential: Ability to adapt to new software and procedures quickly
- Nice to have, but not required: Fluency in languages other than English
Training requirements:
Training begins with about two weeks of self-guided tutorials on tools new technical volunteers will use in their role, including the Open Doors Archive Processor, with which volunteers will practice converting an eFiction archive into the required tables. After finishing tool training, volunteers will be able to claim and process real archives with guidance from the chair team and the senior technical volunteer(s).
