Position Title: Fanlore Chair Track Volunteer (CTV)

Time Requirements: approximately 5-10 hours a week, with a similar requirement and variation throughout the year as a full Chair

Term: 3 to 6 months

Role overview: The position of Chair Track Volunteer is designed for individuals with ample time to learn all aspects of Fanlore’s activities, and who would like to work toward being considered for the role of chair. Chair appointments are made by the OTW Board and are not guaranteed to individuals simply because they are on this track. CTVs may also choose to leave the chair track and remain on the committee as regular volunteers for whatever reason. However, the position is designed to prepare volunteers for such a position in 3-6 months and will involve a combination of assigned tasks, individual study and training, and shadowing of other volunteers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn Fanlore chair work
    • Shadow the committee chair(s) and other volunteers to understand and be able to fulfill the various tasks performed by the committee.
    • Seek opportunities to learn regarding ongoing events in Fanlore and other OTW committees.
    • Train for and understand the tasks of Fanlore’s constituent teams.
    • Complete training readings and attend training meetings with co-chairs.
  • Participate in Fanlore chair work
    • Attend meetings and participate in discussions, eventually leading meetings.
    • Participate in discussions with the Fanlore Gardener team, often on wiki organization or initial responses to users who are new, questioning, or unfamiliar with Fanlore habits.
    • Learn about Fanlore Graphics Designers’ process and what is useful feedback.
    • Help develop email responses and/or documentation with Fanlore Policy & Admin.
    • Write and leave feedback on social media posts along with Fanlore Social Media & Outreach.
    • Help organize a recruitment round.
  • Communicate with chairs in regard to availability, progress on tasks, and any issues that arise that may impact committee work.


  • Familiarity with Fanlore content required, familiarity with Fanlore overall mission preferred.
  • High comfort level with learning new tasks and exploring new online platforms required.
  • Experience with management, leadership, recruitment, or personnel work strongly preferred.
  • Experience with wiki editing, social media, or public relations work preferred.
  • Experience with documentation work preferred.
  • Prior OTW experience not required.

  • Ability to provide rapid turnaround to external communications and volunteers in the committee.
  • Willingness to learn about the OTW, Fanlore policies & procedures, Fanlore’s history and social media presence.
  • Maintains objectivity and professionalism in dealing with internal and external contacts.

Training requirements: New Fanlore CTVs will be provided with information and training by the Fanlore Chair or other Fanlore Committee members in each of the following areas:

  • Fanlore procedures and policies
  • Fanlore Committee internal documentation
  • Fanlore Committee software tools
  • Fanlore Committee editing challenge and editing chat goals, planning process, and types of tasks
  • Fanlore Committee tasks and workflows for all teams
    • In the use of committee tools, posting sites, tasks and workflows, this will be the same training as that of Fanlore Policy & Admin volunteers and the same training as that of Fanlore Social Media & Outreach volunteers
  • Current discussions of organization needs and challenges.
  • Any additional training appropriate to taking on new roles will be provided
