Position Title: Communications Posting Volunteer

Time Requirements: 3-5 hours a week

Term: 1 year, with extensions possible indefinitely

Role overview: Posting Volunteers help compile, write, and distribute news posts and reports. They also help respond to external questions from the public and the media. They may also take part in temporary projects with variable duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write, copyedit, and publish content on AO3, the OTW website, and our social media platforms
  • Help respond to emails to Communications from fans and the media
  • Coordinate and respond to interview requests from media, academics or fan projects
  • Coordinate with OTW committees to organize a monthly newsletter
  • Work collaboratively with other volunteers inside and outside of Communications to complete tasks
  • Draft and publish reports about the OTW, including the OTW Annual Report
  • Research current events in fandom spaces to share with our readership
  • Maintain and update “How To” documentation related to the role and responsibilities
  • Work with Graphics Volunteers to create or update graphics needed to accompany posts and publications

Experience

  • Experience with blogging, social media, or similar communication-related tasks preferred, but not required
  • Experience with public relations or journalism preferred, but not required
  • Experience with editing (e.g. beta reading) preferred, but not required

Skills and Attributes

  • Ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment while completing individual responsibilities
  • Strong English communication skills, especially written
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable and able to commit to and maintain a schedule
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn how to publish social media content on a variety of platforms
  • Interest in report writing, proofreading/copyediting, media relations, or expository writing
  • Familiarity with OTW social media accounts

Role Restrictions

  • A volunteer cannot be in training (including any probationary periods) for this role and any other OTW role at the same time.

Training requirements:

  • New Communications volunteers will be provided information and training by the Communications Chair(s) in accordance with the Communications Training Plan.
