Position Title: Communications Committee – Fanhackers Volunteer

Reports to: Fanhackers Lead

Time Requirements: 2-5 hours/week

Term: 1 year, with extensions possible indefinitely

Role overview: Developing Fanhackers tools and platforms. Creating and soliciting content for Fanhackers platforms (main blog and social media). Consulting with the Fanhackers lead, other Communications volunteers, and non-OTW volunteer Fanhackers contributors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend meetings and participate in brainstorming
  • Carry out assigned committee work, including creating, gathering and soliciting content for Fanhackers platforms

Experience:

  • Previous OTW experience is a plus, but not required
  • Academic or post-secondary experience valued but not necessary
  • Past experience with Word Press, Tumblr and Twitter a plus, but not required

Skills and attributes:

  • Broad interest in analysis of fan culture, from fannish meta to academic research
  • English-language writing ability, bi- or multilingualism preferred
  • Reliability
  • Comfortable with using multiple online platforms and learning to use new ones
  • Ability to work independently as well as in groups
  • Tolerance for slow pace of internal discussions and project development
  • Communication of one’s own work needs and limits to leads and other work partners

Training requirements:

  • Fanhackers volunteers will receive training about the OTW history, structure and tools and about Fanhackers past and present projects, insofar as is required for them to function as members of the Communication Committee. More extensive training about the OTW is available.
  • Openness to mentoring and/or coaching other committee members in specific areas if requested or needed
  • Openness to being mentored or coached if other members have knowledge or experience to share
