Welcome to our first volume of This Week in Fandom! Every Tuesday, we’re going to post a roundup of interesting happenings throughout all of fandom from the past week–everything from trending discussions to academia to exciting announcements to media articles on fandom and more. Since this is our first volume, we’re still tweaking things a bit, and we’d love to hear your feedback. We’d also love your suggestions on what to include in future volumes. If there’s something you’d like to see here, contact us to let us know. Enjoy!
It’s the time of year when thoughts turn to the September television lineup. Fans were excited (or not) about the announcement that Supernatural has been renewed for a 12th season. The upcoming reboot of Xena: Warrior Princess is one step closer to becoming reality now that Javier Grillo-Marxuach has been hired to write the series. And with the news that the queer elements of the original Xena will be unambiguously true in the reboot, fans have even more to look forward to.
Javier Grillo-Marxuach is currently a writer for The 100, though, and The 100 recently had a landmark episode that upset a lot of fans. (Spoiler warning for that link, seriously.) Some fans have questioned how that might affect the writing of Xena. (More spoilers there.) Grillo-Marxuach responded that “Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons,” so it looks like fans will just have to trust The Powers That Be.
Season 2 of Daredevil premiered on Netflix this week! Squee!
Fans have been tweeting their support for actor Dylan O’Brien after the upsetting news that he was injured on the set of The Maze Runner: The Death Cure. It’s not entirely clear what happened at this point, but everyone’s wishing him a speedy recovery.
The OTW has been in the media recently. Archive of Our Own and the Open Doors Fan Culture Preservation Project were discussed in an article about archiving and preservation of fandom on The Learned Fangirl. (This article isn’t technically from this week, but it’s really great, so we wanted to feature it somewhere.) And for those who speak/read Danish, founding OTW member Francesca Coppa was interviewed for an article on female writers of slash fic for information.dk.
Younger fans made their voices heard in Nickelodeon’s 2016 Kids’ Choice Awards. The winners included Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Adele, Zendaya, Cake Boss, and more.
Lastly, SXSW Interactive was held from March 11-15, and it included two panels with staffers from OTW’s Legal committee. We’ll be making a post about that in a few days, so keep your eyes open!
