1 Million Mandarin Chinese Works on AO3

Celebrating 1 Million Mandarin Chinese Fanworks

We’re very excited to announce that AO3 now hosts more than one million 中文-普通话 國語 (Mandarin Chinese) fanworks! Mandarin Chinese is the first non-English language to pass one million fanworks, and we appreciate everyone who’s helped us reach this milestone.

AO3 hosts fanworks in a wide variety of languages: currently, the count is around 150! You can browse the Work Languages page to see more. We’re grateful that so many creators from so many backgrounds have chosen to host their fanworks on AO3, and we appreciate each and every fanwork that’s been shared.

Since many users are multilingual, we wanted to open the floor: which language(s) do you prefer to engage with in fandom? Do you read, listen to, watch, and/or create works in the same language? Is your answer the same for all the fandoms you’re part of?

Thanks to everyone who helped get us here! We look forward to seeing even more languages reach this milestone.

    As an immigrant who has been away from the land where my mother tongue is spoken for 15 years, I cannot express how proud I am at this moment as we celebrate this amazing milestone. I’ve been writing fan fiction in my spare time for 20 years (age-revealing, isn’t it!), and in much of my daily life, writing remains my only connection to this beautiful language. I still begin every first draft with pen and paper, carefully writing down the Chinese characters one by one. A heartfelt thank you to all the writers out there — please keep creating and carrying this language forward.
    作为一名移民，我离开母语所使用的土地已经十五年了。今天看到这个消息，我无法形容自己感到多么自豪。作为一名写了二十年同人文的作者（这也算是“暴露年龄”了吧），写作几乎是我日常生活中与这门美丽语言唯一的联系。我仍然习惯用纸笔起草，把一个个汉字写下来。衷心感谢所有坚持中文创作的作者们——希望我们都能继续创作下去。

    I’m also of Chinese origin, but born and raised in France. Fanfictions and ao3 allowed me to learn English. And now I’m happy to have all the amazing works written in Chinese so that I can practice and learn chinese through fanfictions too. Fanworks and Fandom are amazing communities around and linking the world.
