Join Us At SXSW For ‘Copyright And Creators: 2026’ and ‘Fair Use And Transformative Works Meet Up’

If you’re lucky enough to be holding a golden ticket into SXSW 2016, be sure to stop by and meet OTW’s own Legal Chair Betsy Rosenblatt and Legal staffer Heidi Tandy.

‘Copyright and Creators: 2026’ on Friday March 11th at 5pm

Betsy will be a panelist for the ‘Copyright and Creators: 2026‘ Interactive Panel on Friday, March 11th at 5pm in the JW Marriot (Salon 3-4). Other participants include:

  • John Healey, Moderator (Los Angeles Times)
  • Alexandra Mogyoros (Doctoral Student at University of Oxford)
  • Lateef Mtima (Howard University)

What’s the panel about?

What does the future hold for copyright? Who are the gatekeepers and how does this power structure need to change to meet not only the needs of today’s digital age, but also the needs of future creativity and innovation? The Re:Create Coalition will host the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive panel “Copyright & Creators 2026” on March 11 to discuss the future of copyright law over the next decade. The panel of policy experts–including a fanworks leader, social justice advocate and futurist–will debate the evolution of copyright law and how it affects underprivileged communities, consumers, fans, digital entrepreneurs, cosplayers, and more.

For more information, please see the panel page.

‘Fair Use And Transformative Works Meet Up’ on Sunday March 13th at 3:30pm

Heidi will be presenting at the ‘Fair Use And Transformative Works Meet Up‘ on Sunday, March 13th from 3:30pm-4:30pm in the JW Marriot (Room 213).

What will be covered in the meet up?

This is not an IRL Coffeeshop AU. But we will talk about the use of follow-on works – both fanworks and licensed properties, historically and as mobile technology becomes more robust and global – as well as topics, disputes and sites that have set fandoms ablaze, public relations moments that have inspired and/or frustrated content creators, the intersection between fan communities and social justice, how fanworks find their way into classrooms, the legal issues that underlie everything fans and content-owners do, and possibly our favorite fic recs. Newbies, content owners, fangirls and fanboys and the curious are all welcome – debates and discussion will hopefully instruct and inspire!

For more information, please see the meet up page.

Hope to see you there! And if that’s not enough OTW for you, you can find Heidi at two additional events:

Book Signing on Sunday, March 13th at 5:30 pm

Heidi will be signing copies of FIC: Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World* at about 5:30 pm on Sunday, March 13th at the bookstore on the 3rd floor of the convention center. FIC contains sections by Heidi as well as OTW Board director emerita Francesca Coppa, Transformative Works and Cultures staffer Kristina Busse, and many other fan and professional writers.

FYeahCopyright Third Anniversary Party on Sunday, March 13th, at 7:00pm

Don’t let the fun end early! FYeahCopyright,’The Snopes of copyright & trademark law (for fangirls, fanboys, creators & hipsters),’ is holding a third anniversary afterparty at 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 13th, at CU29 Cocktail Bar.
